About Amal Charity Organization (ACO)

After the collapse of the Somali government in 1990 the civil war caused the destruction of all social institutions and infrastructure. The impact of the civil war has affected all of Somalia, causing; poverty, displacement, hunger, lack of health facilities, water, food, access to education, shelter, etc.
In response to the persisting humanitarian need and continuous problems that Somali people are facing on a day to day, in Feb 2010 a group of Somali men and women from the Diaspora who are committed to make a difference and share the same vision decided to establish ACO.

Amal Charity Organization is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-political, or tribal/clan-based organization that aims to intervene in the development of health, livelihood, education, gender justice, HIV/AIDS awareness, Water facilities & sanitation, and socio-economic services for pastoral/ agro-pastoral people as well as the urban residents in order to enhance food security and provide humanitarian relief for impoverished households.

Amal Charity Organization was established by intellectual Somali Men and women committed to assisting the humanitarian aid needed to those who were afflicted by the natural and manmade disasters in Somalia and the whole horn of Africa and make a tangible difference with their intervene, these women realized the vital role played by NGOs in developing countries and their ability to directly alleviate suffering and engender hope. They also saw a desperate need for humanitarian intervention in Somalia.

Amal Charity Organization is committed to intervene where most needed for gender equity, empowerment of women, and women’s rights advocacy. Traditionally Somali women have had little say in the development of their rights, communities, or their country and we are dedicated to changing this.

Amal Charity Organization is also committed to having an impact on youth programs and protection. youth is the focal point of the current crisis in Somalia and it needs particular attention in order to make an effective change.

Amal Charity Organization started its activities as a partner with Somali Diaspora working in Mogadishu and Baidoa developing rural education. ACO also with the help of funds from the Somali Diaspora did intervene in Mogadishu IDP settlements providing support with income-generating projects and building clean water facilities. The organization has developed the capacity to respond effectively to emergencies by regularly establishing a disaster-preparedness strategy and an implementation plan so that we can fast-track our emergency response where needed.

ACO also has a good relationship with local communities, authorities, and clan elders due to our projects being implemented with community participation and transparency
